Delegate Danny Marshall Announces Help for Some Area Laid-Off Workers

August 1, 2009

From Martinsville Daily:

Delegate Danny Marshall petitioned Governor Tim Kaine to invoke executive order if needed, while working with the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) and the State Attorney General’s Office to help local laid-off workers who are being asked to repay unemployment benefits that had been miscalculated. Delegate Marshall asked that the overpayments not be collected until the workers obtain a new job and that a reasonable payment plan be established.

More than 150 former employees of Yorktowne Cabinetry were receiving unemployment benefits over several months, when an error was discovered showing that the benefits had been overpaid. The laid-off workers were notified by the Virginia Employment Commission that their benefits would be cut significantly, ended immediately, or that they would have to begin repaying the extra money they had received.

Some constituents brought the problem to the attention of Delegate Marshall and he immediately began the process of finding relief.

“The workers who lost their jobs have enough to face to keep their families going during this difficult time. They needed a fast, practical solution to an unusual problem,” stated Delegate Marshall. “I am glad that my idea was accepted and will be implemented.”

The Richmond VEC will be working with each person affected on a case-by-case basis in creating an equitable repayment plan. It will take pressure off those who are still seeking employment.

Delegate Marshall also credits the work of Senator Robert Hurt and Delegate Don Merricks in pressing for a solution. All three offices worked in conjunction, constantly assessing the situation and contacting agencies, to present a unified voice from Southside.

Delegate Danny Marshall (R-Danville) represents the 14th House of Delegates District which includes the City of Danville, parts of Pittsylvania County and parts of Henry County.
